Maryland Nicknames
Old Line State-This name is in reference to the Maryland Line of soliers in the Revolutionary War. General George Washington referreed to the Maryland line as the “Old Line”. This name may also come from the dividing line between William Penn and Lord Baltimore’s land grants.
Free State-Hamilton Owens, the editor of the Baltimore Sun, reffered to Maryland as “The Free State” in his editorials in the 1920′s.
Cockade State-The Maryland Old Line was made up of soldiers bearing cockades, or badges usually worn on hats.
Monumental State-This nickname actually came from Baltimores nickname of “The Monumental City.” The name was given by John Adams on a visit to Baltimore in 1827. This nickname was used to refer to the state over time.
The Oyster State-This nickname refers to the large oyster fisheries in the state.
The Queen State-When Charles I granted the land to Lord Baltimore, he named the state after his Queen Mary, providing the nickname the “Queen State”
